In the heart of the city, the tower of St. Mark’s Cathedral is a symbol to the citizens of Shreveport-Bossier of the Cathedral’s mission “to love and serve the world for Christ.” St. Mark’s Cathedral School is an extension of that mission and seeks to help its students, regardless of religious affiliation, realize their potential and become self-confident educationally, socially, and spiritually so that they may then reach out to help others in our community. Our strong curriculum, coupled with small class sizes and age-appropriate worship and religion classes for all students, ensures that we nurture each student’s heart and mind.

The St. Mark’s curriculum, combining best traditional practices with contemporary research in learning theory, provides children with a strong academic preparation in a structured yet flexible setting. All classes and subjects engage a variety of learning styles and include hands-on and applied learning. We have strong phonics-based reading program which is coordinated between the Pre-school and Lower School divisions and integrated with the handwriting program of both divisions. We use both the Harcourt and University of Chicago math programs. Children begin foreign language instruction in pre-school and continue through 8th grade. St. Mark’s students consistently score well above the national averages on standardized testing and well above state averages on the LEAP.

In all that we do from pre-school through middle school, we provide a sound education that enables our children to function effectively in a rapidly changing society. We teach them to learn independently, to find solutions to the problems that will face them, and to know enough about their culture that they won’t have to repeat the mistakes of the past.

As an Episcopal school, we believe that each of our students is a special child of God, and we take seriously our mission to develop spiritual awareness. All students attend Chapels for their particular division weekly, and students attend weekly religion classes which teach Bible stories and universal Christian values. Parents are encouraged to attend chapel with their children, especially the Friday Family Chapel for all students and parents grades 1-8.

Our twin commitments to outstanding academics and a nurturing, Christian environment find their best expression in our outstanding St. Mark’s faculty. Our teachers have on average over 19 years of experience and have consciously chosen to teach at St. Mark’s, where they can apply their mastery in ways that meet the needs of their individual students. Our teachers want their children not only to be good students but to be good people who will be committed to helping others in their community. St. Mark’s teachers can be found working with students before and after school, attending basketball games and plays to support their students, and taking time in the evening to contact parents whenever they have concerns.

Over the past fifty years, our hundreds of graduates have attended an impressive list of colleges and universities throughout the nation. Many have gone on to obtain graduate and professional degrees and great success in business and the professions. We are proud of their character and achievements—and that many have chosen to educate their own children at St. Mark’s.
